Tort law is the are of law that defines the causes for which one has the basis (aka standing) to file suit.
Tort law simply states that a person has a right to recover for an injury if the party that caused the injury had a duty of care to not have allowed the inury to have happend.

The leading work in this area of law is "Prosser on Torts" and the suggested book is Emmanuel's study guide on torts.
